Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What makes salt stone massage different from regular hot stone massage?Salt stones provide not only heat but also a transfer of 84 trace minerals that are compatible with the human body. These minerals offer additional therapeutic benefits, unlike basalt stones or river rocks, which only provide heat. Additionally, salt stones are naturally antimicrobial, meaning they don’t harbor bacteria.
  2. Do I need special training or certification?
No certification is required, but proper training ensures the best experience for both you and your clients. The technique is slightly different from traditional hot stone massage, and learning how to care for and maintain your stones will ensure they last for years.
  3. How do I heat my salt stones?
Using our specially designed salt bowl, heating your stones is easy. Simply turn it on and set it to high until the stones reach your desired temperature. Once heated, you can gradually lower the setting to maintain the warmth throughout the day. The dimmer feature allows for precise temperature control. We also have heated travel bags and a heated tray.
  4. What do I need to get started?
To start offering salt stone massage, you’ll need:
  • Himalayan salt stones (ours are expertly cut and ready for professional use)
  • A stone warmer to heat them safely
  • Medium of your choice (jojoba is highly recommended)
  • A microfiber cloth, jojoba for protection and Decon30 for cleaning

You can find everything you need on our website

  1. How do I care for the stones?
Avoid exposing them to excessive moisture, as salt stones are hygroscopic (they absorb water from the air). Use jojoba to protect your stones—this liquid wax ester forms a subtle protective layer, keeping them smooth and glassy for years.
  2. How do I clean my salt stones?
Salt stones are naturally antimicrobial, nothing can grow or survive on the mineral rich environment. If you choose to use a cleaner we suggest Decon 30, lightly spray and wipe thoroughly with a dry microfiber cloth follow on with a jojoba application to maintain a smooth, glass-like finish, buff with a cloth. Avoid soaking them in water, as salt is naturally soluble. Keeping them dry and stored properly will ensure longevity.
  3. How long do salt stones last?
With proper care, your salt stones can last for years—even decades! One of our original stones, hand-cut over 20 years ago, is still in perfect condition and used daily! The key is:
    – Use jojoba especially after cleaning to maintain a smooth, glass-like finish.
    – Avoid humidity—moisture causes stones to degrade faster.
    – If roughness develops, a quick sanding with 220-grit sandpaper restores smoothness instantly – followed by jojoba.
  4. How many salt stones do I need?

The number of salt stones you need depends on your practice style. Many therapists start with 6-8 stones for a full-body session, while others prefer having 10-12 for more versatility. Having multiple stones allows for continuous use while others reheat.

  1. Are the massage techniques different from regular hot stone massage?
Yes! Salt stone massage involves gentle gliding, compression, and energy-balancing techniques. Unlike basalt stones, salt stones provide a deeper sense of grounding and their mineral content enhances the overall benefits of the massage.
  2. Will my clients notice the stones during the massage?

No, our salt stones are meticulously prepared through multiple sanding processes and seasoned with a liquid wax ester to create a smooth, glassy finish. Your clients will only feel the warmth, as if your hands are radiating heat.

  1. Will it cost me a lot to add salt stone massage to my services?
Not at all! The initial investment includes stones, a warmer, and protection kit. The long lifespan of the stones makes it a cost-effective, high-value service. Plus, clients are often willing to pay more for a premium salt stone massage.
  2. Can salt stones be used for deep tissue massage?
Yes! The heat from the stones helps loosen tight muscles, making deep tissue work easier and more effective. Applying the stone first warms the area, allowing for deeper manipulation without discomfort.

Clients with high blood pressure, certain skin conditions, or severe inflammation should consult their healthcare provider before receiving a salt stone massage. Always perform a client intake assessment to ensure safety.
